The Pearson’s Test of English is similar to IELTS or other English language proficiency tests which aims at assessing the abilities of the non native English speakers. PTE is accepted by many universities worldwide for assessing the English language abilities of prospective students and is also required by some countries for immigration purposes.
PTE is highly regarded and accepted as a benchmark by many renowned universities like Yale and Harvard.
A candidate must be 18 years of age to attempt a PTE exam. If a candidate is less than 18 years of age, they need to provide parental consent to appear in the examination.
PTE test has two categories –
- PTE Academic – It is for those who want to pursue an undergraduate or post graduate course in an English speaking country where the medium of instruction is also English. PTE Academic assesses listening, reading, speaking and writing all through a computer in a single, three hour test. There is also an optional ten minute break between the reading and listening segment. During the test, you will come across twenty different question formats, ranging from multiple choices to essay writing and interpreting information.
- PTE General – For those who intend to migrate to an English speaking country. The PTE general test typically comprises of two sections, writing and speaking. The written test aims at assessing the listening, reading and writing skills of the candidate. The speaking test assesses the proficiency of a candidate in speaking English.
There is no minimum pass mark for PTE but every university and country have their set benchmark and will require the applicant to score the minimum set score. The test results for PTE are usually out in 5 days.
The exam score for PTE Academic are valid for 2 years from the test date.
The score of PTE general has no expiry date and is valid forever.
