The International English Language Testing System, commonly known as IELTS, is an international standardized test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers. It is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English. IELTS is one of the majorly recognised English-language tests in the world.

Most of the western and English language speaking countries makes it mandatory to score a set band in IELTS to apply for a study, work or PR visa. The more you score in IELTS, better are your chances of securing the applied visa to your destination country.

IELTS test has two categories –

  1. Academic – For those who want to pursue an undergraduate or post graduate course in an English speaking country.
  2. General – For those who intend to migrate to an English speaking country.

There are no minimum pass marks for IELTS but, every country or academic institution that required IELTS from the applicant has a minimum score set for eligibility.

It has four sections – Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. The Listening test is an oral part of the procedure which is conducted on a separate day than the remaining 3 sections, which are written exams.

The written exam can take roughly 3 hours to be conducted and some extra time is required for checking in to the exam hall and registration procedure.

the Listening part comprises of 40 questions spread across four sections. The total time duration for all the sections is 30 minutes.  An additional 10 minutes are given for the test taker to transfer his answers to the answer sheet.

Reading Section
the reading section comprises of 40 questions which are spread across three passages. The section has to be completed within 60 minutes and it evaluates the reading and comprehension of reading matter in many different areas.

Writing section
the writing section consists of two tasks

Task 2: consists of writing a 250 word essay on a given topic which should be completed within 40 minutes

Speaking section

It has three parts which are classified as personal, long talk and discussion.  It is interactive in nature and you will be talking to an examiner.

The personal section has the interviewer introducing him/ herself and asking you some questions about yourself.

During the long talk, you will be speaking at length on a given topic.

During the discussion, you will have an interactive talk with the examiner on the topic you have spoken about.

The IELTS score is marked in the form of a band. You will be assigned a score from 1 to 9 for each section individually and the average of all sections will be your overall score. Band 9 indicates expert in the section and band 1 reflects as having low comfort with the section and, band 5 is roughly a mid range score.

The validity of IELTS score/ band is for two years from the test date. If an individual wants to re appear to enhance his / her score, they can do so whenever they want.

What you score in IELTS is of significant importance as a good score / band gives your application an upper edge. It is advisable to prepare well before appearing for the exam. For further detail on fee, coaching and test booking procedure please get in touch with our process experts.
