The Graduate Record Examinations commonly referred to as GRE, is a standardized computer based test that is mandatory for admissions for most graduate schools in the United States of America. It is mandatory in some other education institutions over the world as well. The GRE is owned and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS).
If you have plans of pursuing higher education, like a postgraduate degree in the US, then clearing GRE with a good score is a must.
GRE has two categories of classification –
GRE General – it tests the Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing skills of a candidate. The duration of the complete test is around 4 hours.
- Analytical Writing – Analytical writing section assesses the candidate’s ability of thinking critically and responding to an argument. The candidate will be expected to critique a paragraph, analyze an argument and analyze an issue as a part of the section.
- Verbal Reasoning Section – Verbal reasoning section assesses a candidate’s ability to read and comprehend passages and logically answer the related questions. Reading Comprehension requires candidates to read general academic or critical reasoning passages and then analyze and answer the related questions. Text completion assesses the ability to read, and complete the sentence to make it coherent. Sentence Equivalence provides the candidate with synonymous words to test their skill in using a word in appropriate context.
- Quantitative Reasoning Section – The Quantitative Reasoning Section assesses the candidate’s ability to compare quantity. It is also used to examine the ability of candidate to verify the sufficiency of data to solve a problem. Candidates will be required to select one out of multiple answers and also fill in the numerical entries that are missing in a given equation.
GRE Subject Test –This category deals with testing knowledge in the specific areas of Biology, Chemistry, English, Mathematics, Psychology, etc. The length of each exam is 170 minutes or 3 hours approx.
The registration fee to take the GRE test is $250 which comes to INR 17760 approx.
The validity of GRE exam score is for 5 years from the test date. One may re attempt a GRE exam after duration of 21 days and up to 5 times over a period of 12 months. If you take the paper-delivered GRE revised general test, you can take it as often as it is conducted.
